Enrollment Guide for International Students (Master's Degree)

Founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a famous Chinese revolutionist, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) has an educational tradition spanning over 100 years. As a university directly affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China and with the strong support of the Ministry of Education of China and Guangdong Province, SYSU has become a first-class modern comprehensive university, renowned both in China and in the world. Composed of five campuses located in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, SYSU is marching towards a world-class university and striving to become a global academic center.

 

In accordance with the relevant documents stipulated by the Ministry of Education and other relevant departments, as well as the actual conditions of SYSU, this guide is formulated as follows:

 

I.Eligibility

1. Applicants should be non-Chinese citizens with valid foreign passports.

 

2. Applicants should be in good health and meet the physical standards that are required for applying for a student visa or residence permit.

 

3. Applicants for master's programs must hold a bachelor's degree equivalent to that of Chinese universities.

 

4. Applicants should be friendly to China, hardworking and diligent in their studies with excellent academic performance, upstanding and law-abiding, without any records of violations of the rules and regulations of their school, or any other security penalties or criminal records.

 

5. Language Proficiency

(1) Applicants of the Chinese-taught programs should have an HSK (level V) certificate (with 180 points or above).

Applicants for Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages should have an HSK level V certificate with 210 points or above and an HSKK intermediate level certificate with 60 points or above.

Those who have taken courses with Chinese as the instruction language can provide proof issued by their former university for verification. After the verification, the applicants can be exempted from providing HSK certificates.

(2) To apply for the English-taught Master of Business Administration program (International Business Administration) (or IMBA), applicants must provide their TOEFL iBT transcripts (79 points or higher, 15 or higher in each subject) or IELTS (6.5 points and higher, 5.5 or higher in each subject).

Applicants who have taken courses instructed in English can submit proof of English language proficiency issued by their former school. Upon verification by SYSU, these applicants may be exempted from providing English level certificates.

For the English-taught Master of Public Administration, applicants must meet the language proficiency requirement in IMBA. For specific details, please refer to the application guide for the Master of Public Administration.

 

6. Applicants of scholarships should meet the age requirement of the scholarship.

III.Application Procedure

Applicants please visit the website of the Office of International Students' Affairs of Sun Yat-sen University (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn), click “APPLY ONLINE” to enter the “International Student Management System”, then click “Account Registration” to create an individual account. Once the account is set up, applicants can proceed by selecting "Account Login" to re-enter the “International Student Management System”. Applicants should then select the correct project: International Students in 2024 (Master's Degree), and upload the following application documents accurately and completely as required

1. The first page of a valid ordinary passport and a personal profile photo

The passport should not expire before December 1, 2024. Please renew the passport if needed. Applicants who are staying in China at the time of application should provide a scanned copy of their passport pages with the Chinese visa or residence permit page, and entry seal. Those who have acquired foreign nationality and were once residents of the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macau Special Administrative Region and Taiwan Region must submit a certificate of cancellation of household registration or a certificate of withdrawal of Chinese nationality, or submit an official document issued by the Chinese diplomatic representation and consular authorities certifying that they do not hold Chinese nationality.

 

2. Diploma, certificates and verification reports of bachelor's degree

Applicants who have graduated from universities in Chinese mainland should submit the "Record of Electronic Registration of Academic Certificates" and "Online Verification Report of Chinese Higher Education Degree for Bachelor's degrees" from the website of Chinese Higher Education Student Information of the Ministry of Education  (https://www.chsi.com.cn).

Applicants who have graduated from universities outside the Chinese mainland should submit "Verification of Foreign Academic Degrees" from the website (https://www.cscse.edu.cn) of the Chinese Service Center for Scholarly Exchanges. Fresh graduates can submit a pre-graduation certificate issued by their institution.

Applicants who do not submit their certificate of master's degree before coming to SYSU will have their admission canceled.

 

3. Complete transcripts of undergraduate studies

Transcripts should be issued and stamped by the Deparment of Academic Affairs or relevant student administration department of the applicant's university. Applicants who are in the last year of their undergraduate program e can submit their latest transcript issued by their university during the application process and resubmit a complete transcript when they receive one. Those who do not submit a complete transcript of their undergraduate studies before coming to SYSU will have their admission canceled.

 

4. Chinese language proficiency certificate

Applicants who apply for Chinese-taught programs should submit a valid certificate of Chinese language proficiency (HSK) or any proof of having taken courses with Chinese as the instruction language. Applicants of the Master of International Chinese Language Education should submit an HSSK report in addition. Applicants of English-taught programs should submit TOFEL, IELTS certificate, or any proof of having taken any English-taught program.

 

5. Two letters of recommendation

The letters of recommendation should be provided with signatures by professors or associate professors (see Attachment 1 for template).

 

6. Plan of study and research in China

The plan should be over 1000 words, including relevant major or research background/reasons for applying for the project/postgraduate study and research plan/career goal after graduation, etc. (see Attachment 2 for template)

 

7. Proof of financial status

The applicant should submit proof of deposit balance issued by a bank, amounting to RMB 100,000 or more. If the bank account is not owned by the applicant, proof of relationship with the financial guarantor (such as birth certificate, household registration booklet, and notarized documents) must be submitted at the same time.

 

8. Physical examination and blood test results

The physical examination results should be stamped by the hospital and issued within six months prior to the date of submission (see Attachment 3 for template). Those who are living in the Chinese mainland with a valid foreign residency permit or permanent foreign permanent resident ID card can use the permit or the ID card as a document to replace Foreigner Physical Examination Form.

 

9. Certificate of Non-Criminal Record

The applicant should submit a valid non-criminal record issued by local authorities; the document should be issued within six months before the date of application submission.

 

10. Scholarship application form

Applicants should fill in the scholarship application form as required, and sign on the last page of the form. Applicants can find details of the scholarship application guide on the website (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn) of the Office of International Students' Affairs of Sun Yat-sen University.

 

11. Supporting documents

Applicants can submit award certificates or proof of experience.

 

12. Commitment letter

The application information should be true, legal and valid. Please print and sign the document before uploading it to the system. (see Attachment 4 for the template.)

 

13. Personal Information Form

The Personal Information Form is automatically generated by the International Student Management System and should be uploaded back to the system after printing and signing.

Note: Application documents must be either in Chinese or English. If the documents are in other languages, the original documents and their notarized Chinese or English translation of the documents must be attached. Please make sure that the applicant's email address, WeChat number and contact phone number filled in on the system are accurate. We will send a notice of supplementary documents by email (emails will be sent via admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). Failing to submit supplementary documents in time, providing notarized certificates that do not meet the requirements, or providing incorrect information will cause unsuccessful applications.

 

IV.Majors for International Students and Enrollment Schools/Departments

1. Please refer to Attachment 5 for the Catalog of Majors for International Students (Master's Degree) at SYSU in 2024 and follow the application guidance on the website of the Office of International Students' Affairs (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn) to check the list of majors for scholarship programs.

 

2. Please refer to the link (https://www.sysu.edu.cn/yxsz.htm) for information on departments of SYSU, and refer to Attachment 6 for contact information of SYSU departments that enroll international students (Master's Degree).

 

V.Selection Procedures

1. Qualification Review

SYSU will review the applicant's foreign status, highest academic qualification, academic performance, Chinese language proficiency, recommendations, and study plan to determine the assessment list.

 

2. Assessment

Assessment will be organized by admission teams of each school/department in one of the following methods: (1) Interview; (2) Interview and written examination. The admission team of each school/department will notify those who have passed the qualification review of the specific assessment method, location and time.

 

3. Admission

(1) SYSU will select applicants based on their qualifications and assessments. Outstanding new students will be recommended to apply for scholarships, and the list of scholarship recipients will be announced by the scholarship management administration.

(2) Pre-admission results will be available on our application website. The electronic Admission Letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China will be sent via email (emails will be sent via admissions@mail.sysu.edu.cn). Please ensure that the provided email address is accurate and functional.

(3) Admitted applicants must apply for an X1 visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate with the electronic Admission Letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China. X1 visa holders must complete residential procedures at local public security departments within 30 days of entering China. Failure to comply may result in cancellation of admission. SYSU will not accept the registration of students without a valid student visa, and expired visas or residence permits are not permitted to stay or engage in activities on campus.

2. The comprehensive insurance for international students including accident and sickness medical, hospitalization, accidental disability and death insurance is 800 yuan per person per academic year.

 

VII.Scholarship

For details on the scholarship program, please visit the “SCHOLARSHIP” program section of the website of the SYSU Office of International Students' Affairs (http://iso.sysu.edu.cn).

1. Chinese Government Scholarship -Bilateral Program (Full or Partial Scholarship)

The Chinese Government Scholarship is administered by the Chinese government. Applicants who meet the requirements can directly apply to their home country's dispatching department or the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy (Consulate General) in the host country, depending on the program type. The application period usually falls between January and early April, and deadlines vary from country to country. Please check in advance. For detailed information on the application and assessment for the scholarship, please refer to the application guide of Chinese Government Scholarship—Bilateral Program for the year 2024 at SYSU. Please visit the Chinese Government Scholarship (https://campuschina.org), register, select the project type (Type A_Ph.D), and submit required materials. Applicants must also register in SYSU’s application system (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn/login). Upon registration, choose “Chinese Government Scholarship—Bilateral Program in 2024” and submit necessary materials as instructed.

 

2. The 2023 Youth of Excellence Scheme of China Program Chinese Government Scholarship for Applicants from Countries along the Belt and Road: Master of Public Administration in Chinese Governance (full scholarship)

This scholarship, administered by the Chinese government, aims to cultivate global governance professionals with international vision, excellent comprehensive quality, outstanding leadership and cross-cultural background. The specific application timeline will be announced by The China Scholarship Council. Please visit the website (https://campuschina.org) of the Chinese government scholarship, register, select the project type (Type A), and submit required materials. Applicants should also register on SYSU's application website (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn/login), select "The Youth of Excellence Scheme of China Program Chinese Government Scholarship", and submit materials as required.

 

3. Chinese Government Scholarship – High-Level Graduate Program (Full Scholarship)

This program is set up by the Chinese government to select international students with excellent academic backgrounds, professional capabilities and development potential. To apply for this program, please visit the Chinese Government Scholarship Registration System(https://campuschina.org), register an account, select the project type (Type B), select the enrollment code of Sun Yat-sen University “10558”, and submit required materials. Applicants must also register in our school system (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn) before February 15, 2024, select "Chinese Government Scholarship—High-Level Graduate Program", and submit required materials. SYSU will assemble an expert review group to assess the application materials, which will then be submitted to the China Scholarship Council (CSC). The final admission results are contingent upon the approval of the CSC.

 

4.  Silk Road - Chinese Government Scholarship (Full Scholarship)

This program is administered by the Chinese government to cultivate leaders and excellent skilled personnel in various professions for the countries along the Belt and Road and BRI partner countries. The exact time for application (including the deadline) for the program is subject to the approval of the CSC. Please visit the Chinese Government Scholarship registration system (https://campuschina.org) to register, select the project type (Type B_Master), select the enrollment code of SYSU (10558), and submit the required materials. Applicants should also register in the SYSU's system (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn). Upon registration, please select “Silk Road  - Chinese Government Scholarship Program in 2023 (Type B_Master's Degree)”, and submit materials as required. SYSU will assemble an expert review group to assess the application materials, which will then be submitted to the China Scholarship Council (CSC). The final admission results are contingent upon the approval of the CSC.

 

5. International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (Full Scholarship)

This scholarship, established by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of MOE, is intended for students and Chinese language teachers from all over the world who come to China to study and research the Chinese language and culture and pursue a master's degree in international Chinese language education. The specific application timeline will be announced by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of MOE. SYSU is an international Chinese language teacher scholarship enrollment institution and will recruit students (master's degree) from all over the world. Applicants may contact the Confucius Institutes in their home countries, relevant overseas Chinese language examination centers, HSK test centers, professional associations for Chinese language instruction in other countries, and China's embassies (consulates) abroad for consultation and recommendations. To apply for this program, please visit the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (http://www.chinese.cn), create an account, select the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship Program, and submit required materials. Applicants should also register on SYSU's website (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn), select " International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship in 2024" and submit materials as required.

 

6. Master's in Public Administration of the China Governance Program of the Ministry of Commerce of China (Full Scholarship)

This is a foreign aid program set up by the Ministry of Commerce. Applicants can generally apply through the Chinese embassies and consulates abroad (Economic and Commercial Office) before the end of May each year. Specific details are based on the enrollment prospectus reviewed and announced by the Ministry of Commerce in the same year (https://www.china-aibo.cn/zwgk1/zsjj.htm). To apply for this program, please visit the application site of the Chinese Scholarship Committee (https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn), register an account, select Type B, select the enrollment code of SYSU 10558, and submit materials as required. Applicants should also register on SYSU's website (https://apply.sysu.edu.cn), select " MPA of the China Governance Program of the Ministry of Commerce of China in 2024", and submit materials as required. 

 

7. Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship (Partial Scholarship)

New students not sponsored by any government scholarship can apply for the Guangdong Government Outstanding International Student Scholarship. Eligible overseas students of master's degree can receive a one-off grant totaling RMB 20,000 per person for the first academic year.

 

Note: Applicants for the mentioned scholarships must undergo a scholarship review of their performance as per regulations after registration. Only upon passing this review can they proceed to apply for or receive the scholarship funds.

 

VIII. Regulations about Accommodation and Insurance

1. Due to the limited number of student dormitories on campus, self-funded students should handle accommodation by themselves.

 

2. The Chinese Government Scholarship, the Center of Language Education and Cooperation Scholarship and Ministry of Commerce Scholarship recipients will be provided on-campus accommodation according to relevant regulations.

 

3. SYSU implements an insurance system covering all international students. International students must insure themselves in accordance with the relevant regulations of China and SYSU. If the student does not insure themselves as required, he or she must purchase insurance within a fixed period of time. Students who have no insurance after the time limit has expired will not be allowed to register or will be forced to drop out if they have already begun studying at SYSU.

 

IX.Supervision

1. Admitted students must complete registration procedures according to the registration date and location required in the Admission Letter. They are not allowed to register in advance. Those who have failed to register within the time limit without approval will be regarded as having given up their admission qualifications. Scholarship recipients will be disqualified.

 

2. Applicants should be responsible for the materials submitted. In accordance with relevant regulations of China and SYSU, applicants who have fabricated materials to obtain admissions will have their admission qualifications and student status canceled by SYSU. After verification, relevant administrative departments will be informed of the facts of the applicants' fabrication.

 

3. In accordance with the relevant regulations and requirements of the Ministry of Education, SYSU will conduct a physical examination and review of admission eligibility for all admitted applicants after enrollment. Applicants who have not met the admission requirements or have provided fabricated materials will be disqualified from admission or student status. Scholarship recipients will be disqualified.

 

4. The SYSU Office of International Students' Affairs performs the supervisory duties of the admissions. The Discipline Inspection and Supervision Department performs specific supervisory duties.

 

X.Supplementary Provisions

1. This guide is applicable to the enrollment work for 2024 International Students (Master's Degree) of SYSU, and shall be implemented as of the date of publication.

 

2. This guide will be explained by the SYSU Office of International Students' Affairs authorized by the SYSU Undergraduate Admission Leading Group.

 

3. If the policies of the Ministry of Education and relevant departments are adjusted, the new regulations shall be implemented accordingly.
